Motorists Urged Not to Leave Litter on A483
Motorists who use the A483 are being urged to take their rubbish home after staff have once again spent valuable time and resources cleaning up litter from the roadside.
The Council has a duty to clear litter from public places and it is estimated to cost local authorities in Wales over £40 million a year to remove litter from our streets.
Wrexham’s lead member for the Environment, Cllr David A Bithell, made the call after seeing for himself the amount of litter being collected by staff and the amount of resources the job was taking up.
He said: “We want Wrexham to be an environmentally responsible place yet since Christmas staff have had to spend a considerable amount of time cleaning up litter on the A483 which is being dropped and thrown out of cars and lorries, some without netting.
“The message is simple take your rubbish home with you, place it in a bin or face the consequences of being fined. Our officers are monitoring all areas and will not hesitate to take the necessary enforcement action.
“In times of such austerity it is wrong that resources that could be used to protect and maintain vital council services are used to pick up other people’s litter. The work along this busy road can also be very dangerous for the staff concerned.”
Enforcement officers have the power to issue a £75.00 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) to anyone caught littering and over the last four years 700 people have been issued with FPNs. If the fine is not paid and the case proceeds to court fines can be as much as £2,500 plus costs.
