A Glyndwr University student who has been missing since the early hours of Monday 2 January has been found dead by police in Manchester.

20-year-old Gurdeep Hayer was last seen after a night out at Sankeys nightclub in the city, but was reported missing by his parents when he failed to return home to West Bromwich.

His body was found in a river near to York Street in the city centre shortly after 2.50pm yesterday.

Gurdeep was a first year business student at Glyndwr and lived in Wrexham during term time.

Students from the university had been planning to join the search for him before yesterday’s sad news was announced.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly after 2.50pm on Monday 9 January 2012, a man’s body was found in the river near to York Street in the city centre.

“The body has today been formally identified as Gurdeep Hayer.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

“A Home Office post-mortem is due to take place later this week.”

A spokesperson for Glyndwr University said that everyone at the university had been saddened by the news of Gurdeep’s death and that he was “a popular and talented student whose loss will be felt by all who knew him”.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Scott joined the tributes to Mr Hayer, he said: “I was fortunate enough to spend some time speaking to Gurdeep shortly before Christmas.

“We discussed our shared roots in the West Midlands and it was clear how much he enjoyed university life and how well-liked he was by his peers.

“The thoughts of everyone at Glyndŵr University are with Gurdeep’s family at this tragic time.”

Student President Adam Fuller said: “Gurdeep was an extremely popular figure at the university, and particularly in the Wrexham Village accommodation where he lived.

“On behalf of all Glyndŵr University students I wish to send my condolences to Gurdeep’s family.”

It is understood that Gurdeep had travelled from his home in West Bromwich to spend New Year’s Eve in Manchester.

He then went out with friend the following night on January 1st to Sankeys nightclub and was last seen at 2.15am on January 2nd getting out of a taxi near Manchester’s Victoria Baths.
