ASDA Wrexham became a no go area this morning as a visit by a celebrity magician descended into chaos. ASDA closed the store in response to the crowds.

Performer ‘Dynamo’ was due to appear at Wrexham’s ASDA store, his arrival creating a large crowd of people inside and out. The supermarkets carpark was eventually closed off due to safety reasons, and roads around the store backed up with traffic.

North Wales Police said “Asda have closed the store for now due to a high number of people at the location.”

As the crowds grew as did the police numbers, although they didnt have far to walk!

People told us they had queued from 5:45am this morning to get a glimpse of the artist, and those who hang around until 12:30 did get to see him briefly. Dynamo, who apparently was aware of the crowds, did very briefly pop outside to wave to the huge crowd gathered.

Julie got in touch to say “ASDA were blocking off aisles so you couldn’t shop, worried because of the fire risk they were causing. Whoever had the brainwave to have him in store for goodness sake, surely a stage outside would have been more appropriate?”

Melissa emailed to echo the comments saying “I took my two children to see Dynamo at Asda this morning to be told that only the people in the queue would get a chance to see him – I then had to explain to a 5 & 6 year old why they would not see him.”

Shaun said “The staff were downright rude when trying to get us to move even to a point where I refused to move from the aisle until my 3 year old son had picked his magazine I was accused of shouting and causing a scene.”

“I think I will be shopping at Tesco from now on considering a disappointing day for my kids turned out to be even more upsetting with no help from the staff”

An ASDA spokesman said “We would like to apologise to any of our customers who were affected by the crowds that flocked to see Dynamo at Asda Wrexham. We clearly underestimated the power of Dynamo – although even he couldn’t make the crowds disappear.”

At one point security staff were taking mobile phones from people, walking inside the store with them to take a photo, then returning the mobiles to their owners outside.

Emma Gaffey told us she was half an hour late for work, a journey that usually takes her around five minutes.

The carpark was coned off.

By 10:30am the queue to see Dynamo was being restricted, causing anger with those outside waiting to get in. Sian Edwards said “One worker shouted in my sons face to move because they were cutting the line down”.

Ian Edwards said “Poor organising, kids crying because there turned away”.

Anthony Mark-Duda mentioned the crowds had affected the performance space itself saying “Brilliant organisation by Asda management. Even dancers in front were not given room to dance.”
