Maelor Tutor Sails Atlantic For Charity
A tutor at Wrexham Maelor Hospital is currently sailing the Atlantic single-handedly as part of a challenge to raise money for Nightingale House Hospice.
Tom Williams is a Clinical Skills tutor at the Maelor and is currently at the most difficult part of his journey as he crosses the Bay of Biscay to Spain and Portugal.
Tom’s target is to raise over £1,000 for the hospice during his twelve month challenge, he will finish his journey in the Azores before coming back to UK..
“Having spent years as a paramedic in Wrexham, I’ve had chance to see the excellent work done by Nightingale House” said Tom.
“Also my Nainee, Stella Stott, was cared for there towards the end of her life. I’ve always wanted to make this trip and raising funds for the brilliant cause of the hospice is a way of saying thank you.”
The adventurer set off in September having prepared a small 30ft boat for the journey.
His route is divided into three stages; the first leg took Tom from Caernarfon across the Irish Sea to Wexford, across the Bay of Biscay to Spain and Portugal and then to the Canary Islands.
The second part of his trip will involve crossing the Atlantic Ocean, which will start on the 13th November where he will sail 3,000 miles in between 25 and 35 days.
Finally, after crossing the North Atlantic and stopping in Bermuda and the Azores, Tom hopes to finish by August 2012.
