A Wrexham woman is getting ready to embark on a 10k charity walk in tribute to her mum who passed away last year.

Bethan Chappell, from Penley, will be taking on the Ladies Midnight Walk through Wrexham on Saturday June 17th in honour of her mum Lorraine Edwards, who passed away at Nightingale House Hospice last year.

This summer’s event will be the first Ladies Midnight Walk Bethan has taken part in, however she hopes to raise awareness of the work carried out at the hospice after experiencing firsthand the support it provides.

“My family and I practically lived in Nightingale House over September and October of last year whilst my mum saw the last days of her life out, and even now it feels like home when we visit Cafe Cwtch,” said Bethan.

“Previous to my Mum’s admittance into Nightingale House, I’d heard about the good work there but it was only when I experienced it firsthand that I realised just how much support it provides,” says Bethan.

“I really cannot speak highly enough of the Hospice, and will do anything I can to raise awareness and funds to help support them.”

Bethan says that the memory of the care her mum received during her time at Nightingale House really helped her through the dark days when she first passed away.

She said: “The level of care she received was extremely high, and not just from the nurses but all members of staff at Nightingale House. She struck up a friendship with the catering staff in particular, who couldn’t do enough to cater for her needs when she’d lost her appetite through her illness. Everyone was so very attentive and supportive, which meant a great deal to my Mum and to us as her family.

“What struck us was the level of care we also received. My mind was put at rest as my Dad was also extremely well looked after by the nurses, kitchen staff and volunteers. When the situation got harder, we received emotional support which we were so very grateful for at a very upsetting and isolating time.”

Now Bethan is inviting anyone who may have lost someone they love to join her in the Ladies Midnight Walk and to show their support for the unsung heroes that make up the Hospice staff as well as those who need the service it provides.

“I have never participated in the Midnight Walk so it will be my first one,” said Bethan.

“My Mum actually participated in two. I will do it every year going forward from now on to raise funds and awareness for the Hospice, but also to follow in my mum’s footsteps.

“I have several friends joining me on the walk, as they also want to help me to say thank you to Nightingale House. If anyone fancies joining me for all or part of the walk at my pace, or their own, that would be great. Let’s all raise as much money as we can for the unsung heroes of our local Hospice.

“After all, you never know when you will need the great care provided by Nightingale House.”

Bethan added: “Unfortunately, with 1 in 2 of us predicted to get cancer, and everyone knowing someone who has been affected by this awful illness, there is a high chance that many of us will need the Hospice at some point in our lives.”

The Ladies Midnight Walk takes place on the 17th June at 10:30pm. You can register for the event via the Nightingale House Hospice website
