A celebratory event which highlights local sporting achievements in Wrexham, is to return at the end of the year.

Wrexham Council have announced that this year’s Sports Awards will take place at Brymbo Sports and Social complex on 3rd November.

The Wrexham Sports Awards is a prestigious event which focuses on the ‘excellent work of local people in local communities across the county borough, along with recognising the achievements of athletes, coaches and volunteers looking to achieve sporting excellence’.

Wrexham’s Sports Awards recognises local achievements and offers residents to put forward nominations for categories such as: Team of the Year, Service to Sports Award and Club of the Year.

Earlier this year there were rumours circulating online that the annual event had been cancelled. However these rumours were quickly rejected by Wrexham Council, who noted they were looking to attract sponsorship for the event.

Sports clubs, schools and volunteers across Wrexham are now invited to nominate those individuals or teams they feel deserve an award.

Awards will be made in the following categories:

Junior and Senior Sports Personality of the Year
Disability Sports Personality of the Year
Service to Sport
Junior and Senior Volunteer of the Year
School Achievement (Primary or Secondary)
Coach of the Year
Club of the Year
Team of the Year

Speaking about the return of the Sports Awards, Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “I am very pleased that we are once again to host these prestigious awards. They raise the profile of local sporting clubs and athletics in the area and rewards them for their enormous contributions to sport in Wrexham and the surrounding areas.”

Cllr Ron Prince, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti Poverty, added: “Many of our young people are excelling at sports due to the work of the many volunteers who give their time selflessly to a particular sport. The Awards are an excellent way to say thank you to everyone involved.”

Groups, organisations and businesses in Wrexham are also invited to support the event by sponsoring an award. If you are able to offer this level of support to do this please contact [email protected].

More information on the event and how you can make a nomination can be found on the Wrexham Council website.

Closing date for nominations is 12 noon on Friday 23rd September.
