Local MP Praises Army Battalion
Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has praised the work of an Army Battalion given the Freedom of the Borough.
Mr Lucas was among those present at Wrexham’s Guildhall on April 5th to see the 101 Force Support Battalion – Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) given the honour at a special ceremony.
Around 280 soldiers from the 101 Force Support Battalion marched through the streets of Wrexham town centre, starting their journey from their base at the Hightown Barracks at 11:00am.
Mr Lucas said: “The Battalion is part of Wrexham’s proud military tradition and fully deserved today’s honour.
“They have served their country, and the local community, with distinction. I was pleased to see them receive the Freedom of the Borough today.”
The battalion has been based at Hightown Barracks in Wrexham for almost a decade and a half and have developed close links with the community – including helping respond to local disasters and emergencies. As an Army Battalion, it provides repair and recovery support for vehicles and equipment.
Made up of both regular and Territorial Army soldiers, the Battalion has served in Afghanistan and Cyprus, supported other operations around the globe, and lent its support to Operation Olympics last year – with ten soldiers on duty at the 2012 Olympic Games.
