A fencer from Wrexham has become the first person from North Wales to be named the Welsh Fencing Champion.

David Gregory, who represents Great Britain and Wales in the sport is the first person from North Wales to win the acclaimed title in its nineteen year history.

Initially drawn to the use of modern technology in the sport, David began fencing during a taster session in secondary school when he was 11.

David said: “After a few weeks I was invited to a local club and started competing within 8 weeks of joining”.

Over the last ten years he has represented Great Britain and Wales internationally in the under 17, under 20 and senior categories.

In 2010, David represented Wales in the Commonwealth Games and now has his sights firmly fixed on next years event and is striving for a medal in the competition.

More recently the fencing star has racked up a number of titles, including Welsh Champion 2013, The 5 Nations Wales Team Champion and the Essex Open Champion.

However the accolade of Welsh Fencing Champion is one that means a great deal to both David and his family.

David said: “I’ve only recently won this senior title in mid-April 2013, so the trophy hasn’t even been engraved yet!

“I’ve previously held titles at youth levels including back-to-back Under 18 British Champion and they mean a great deal, not just to me but to the people who continue to support me along the way.”
