A local choir won big this weekend after taking part in their first choral competition in eight years.

The Fron Male Voice Choir took the crown at the Derry International Choral Festival after winning the National Male Voice competition over the weekend.

The choir, based in Froncysyllte near Llangollen initially formed in 1947 to compete at the first Llangollen Eisteddfod.

In 2006 the choir signed to Universal Records and have since released five albums as the ‘Voices of The Valleys’. The choir have gone on to sell over a million records in the UK – with their debut album going on to become the fastest selling classical album of all time.

David Jones, Choir Head said: “The choir has taken a break from from competitions for the past eight years due to the ‘Voices of The Valleys’, but we have recently got back into competitive singing.

“We tested the waters last year at a competition at the Isle of Man and came second. This year however we went one better and won.”

The choir now have two further competitions lined up.

Next month the Fron Male Voice Choir will perform at the William Aston Hall during the ‘A Night To Remember’ event.

The event will see the choir and Jackfield (Elcock Reisen) brass band commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the start of World War 1 with an evening of music.
