The January winner of the Wonders of Wrexham 2018 Calendar photography competition has been revealed.

The winning photograph of the Anna Maria Peel Memorial Chapel at the Wrexham Road Cemetery in Overton on Dee, was captured by keen amateur photographer, Geraint Roberts.

Named after Anna Maria Peel, the first wife of Edmund Peel of Bryn y Pys, the cemetery and chapel were consecrated on 17 June 1872 and suffered damage in the 1960s.

On hearing of his win Geraint said: “I’m over the moon. The Chapel in Overton is one of many little gems in Wrexham and I will be out and about in the coming months looking for some more to enter into the competition in the coming months.”

Cllr Bob Dutton, Lead member for Corporate Services and health and Safety, added: “I’d like to pass my congratulations on to Geraint for his beautiful photograph. Competition remains high for the top spot with many excellent entries received each month so please keep those photos coming in.”

The Wonders of Wrexham 2018 Calendar Competition was launched at the beginning of November following the news that North Wales is ranked fourth in the world of regions to visit. Staff at the time thought it only right that Wrexham celebrated its place in the world with a snapshot record of Wrexham throughout the year.

The aim of the competition is to find the photograph taken by an amateur photographer which captures the essence of the month of entry. Entries are now invited for February with the winner being announced early march.

The winning photographs will all be features in a Wonders of Wrexham 2018 calendar.

There’s no prize except all 12 winners will receive copies of the Wonders of Wrexham 2018 calendar when it is produced in November 2017 with their photo and name attributed.

All profits from the sale of the calendar will be donated to the Mayor’s chosen charities.

Entries can be of anywhere in the County Borough taken during the month of February and terms and conditions apply.

Photos should be submitted via email, full resolution preferred, to [email protected]. Further information and terms and conditions are available on the Council’s website at www.wrexham.gov.uk

Previous winning entries for the Wonders of Wrexham Calendar include November and December.
