An innovative housing development for former armed forces personnel is now up and running – with a handful of flats still available for people looking for a new home.

Tŷ Ryan, based on Croesnewydd Road, saw ex-service personnel given the opportunity to get involved with the building work and gain valuable trade skills and qualifications.

Described as the first of its kind to take place in Wales, Tŷ Ryan is made up of 16 apartments and received its first tenants in March when the building works were completed.

Eight ex-service personnel successfully took part and have now been offered apartments at the scheme.

Tŷ Ryan has been developed in partnership between Wrexham Council, who supplied the land, First Choice Housing Association, who managed the construction of the scheme, and the Community Self-Build Agency (CBSA) who mentored the self-builders during the construction phase.

There are now just a handful of two-bedroom flats left at Tŷ Ryan – with Wrexham Council encouraging anyone with an armed forces background and looking for a new home to get in touch.

Cllr David Griffiths, lead member for housing and Wrexham Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “We appreciate it can be difficult for veterans to re-adjust to civilian life, and some of the problems they encounter while trying to settle down could affect them well after they’ve been discharged from the armed forces.

“We worked on iTŷ Ryan alongside the First Choice Housing Association with the aim of taking some of that pressure off, and we hope we’ve been successful in the aim in creating quality housing which suits veterans’ needs.”

How to get involved with Tŷ Ryan?

If you are ex-forces and looking for housing; are related to an ex-forces person or have links to a veteran through marriage, it could be worth your while getting in touch – especially given that there are just a few flats left.

The scheme is open to those in employment or unemployed; single people and families and charges affordable rents.

The registration takes no longer than 15 minutes, followed by an application to Wrexham Council.
