Issues parking at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital have been well known and documented in the area for some time – however it has since been confirmed that an independent report into the problem has been commissioned.

Recently Wrexham.com has been contacted by several people with regards to the ongoing issues, with some people noting that they are struggling to park to visit relatives or friends, with another commenting that they missed an appointment at the hospital due to not finding space in the car park.  Speaking with some who work at the Maelor we have also been told some shift patterns are preferred over others primarily due to the issues over parking.

Last week Wrexham.com contacted Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to query if any action had been taken to resolve the issues.

A spokesperson for the Health Board confirmed that an external independent report on parking at the hospital had been commissioned and that the health board were awaiting results.

The spokesperson said: “We are aware that Car Parking on the Wrexham Maelor site continues to be a problem and we have recently commissioned an external independent report on the Wrexham Maelor car parking facility. This report has now been received and over the coming weeks we will be looking at the recommendations and how these can be taken forward.

“We are also aware that from time to time some people are using the car park on the Wrexham Maelor site when they do not have any business at the hospital. We are working with the Community Health Council to make sure parking areas are only being used by people who need to attend the hospital, without causing inconvenience to genuine patients and visitors.”

Concerns have also been raised with regards to people not using the car park for its actual purpose, with fears that shoppers are parking in the hospital car park and then travelling into the town centre or nearby supermarkets.

Such fears were raised at a recent planning meeting which saw councillors grant approval to the development of a new Aldi supermarket on Ruthin Road. In the meeting one of the main concerns raised by councillors was that shoppers who could not find a space at the car park, would instead park in the Maelor and cut across the path to Aldi.

The spokesperson added: “We would urge anyone who is not using our car parks properly to think about the inconvenience and anxiety it can cause patients who have difficulties parking when they are trying to get to their appointments on time, or visitors who are already worried about their relatives or friends in hospital.”
