The streets of the town centre were alive with community spirit over the weekend, with huge crowds flocking to the eighth Wrexham Street Festival.

Saturday saw a jam packed day of fun and activities across the town centre, with the monthly Wrexham Street Festival drawing huge crowds with its offering of live entertainment, local stalls and community spirit.

Now in its eighth run the Wrexham Street Festival was launched last year by a team of volunteers, local businesses and members of the Town Centre Forum in a bid to regenerate the town and create more footfall.

While initially starting as a series of trial events last year, due to great success the Wrexham Street Festival launched as a monthly event in April this year.

Saturday’s event has been described as the ‘best Street Festival yet’ by Chairman of the Town Centre Forum, Nigel Lewis.

Mr Lewis said: ” “When we started out with the first Street Festival last year, my vision was all about days like today. There was a tremendous vibe in town on Saturday.

“Wales is doing fantastically at Euro 2016; summer has started; and we had a great line up of stalls and entertainment. And local people came along to have some fun.”

Across Hope Street, Regent Street and Queen Street there were an array of stalls and businesses
selling everything from artisan fudge and cakes to wooden garden furniture and even a pets corner.

Chris Davies from the Weird and Wonderful Cheese Company, one of the stall holders, said: “We’ve had a tremendous day! The favourite cheeses in Wrexham today have been Cheddar Crunch, Balsamic Onion and the hottest cheese in the country, Scorpion, has been popular too. Today was the first time for us at a Wrexham Street Festival and we will definitely be back.”

Queen’s Square also featured as part of the Street Festival for the first time; playing host to live entertainment from “Dancing Shoes” Community Dance School, music students from the Maelor School and local vocalists Luke Gallagher, Jamie Larkin and Victoria Lewis.

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham and his wife Norah put together the entertainment programme for the Street Festival and speaking at the event, Mr Lucas said: “We’ve had beautiful weather and it’s been a beautiful day! There’s been tremendous new craft and exciting food stalls to tempt everyone and lots of local entertainment.

“I am delighted that the Street Festivals are going from strength to strength.”

Local sports clubs and providers were also on hand throughout the day offering free taster sessions and offering information about their local classes.

Young gymnasts from Wrexham Gymnastics Club did a sponsored bounce-a-thon to raise money for equipment and showcased some of their skills; RJ Coaching hosted a football skills session for local children; members from Bradley Park Bowling Club brought their portable bowling mat and bowling target game which young and old alike enjoyed; Hoola Nation instructors led a fun join in hoola hooping activity; and Wrexham Fit Camp instructors ran a Fit Challenge.

Alex Owen, Head Coach at Wrexham Gymnastics Club, who attended the Street Festival with a group of young gymnasts commented: “It was a great opportunity to come into the town centre and perform a routine for the local community. We were also able to talk to new families about our classes and training. It was a fantastic day for us all.”

And after the Street Festival finished, the Portuguese Saints Celebrations carried on into the evening and the Nightingale Hospice 10th Ladies’ Midnight Walk rounded off a fantastic day, full of community spirit.

Wrexham’s High Street was also alive with celebrations this evening as Wales made their way through to the Euro 2016 Quarter Finals.

Mr Lewis concluded: “The Street Festivals have proved a great success since the first event last year and they are now a regular monthly feature in the town centre. All sorts of local people are now starting to pull together to change things and to make Wrexham a town we can all be proud of.

“I would urge you to come along to the next Street Festival on Saturday 30th July and join in the fun – we’d love to see as many of you as possible.”
