How have Wrexham schools ranked in this year’s colour coded performance data?

The system, which is released annually as part of the Welsh Government’s National Categorisation System, was introduced in 2014 to help identify those schools in need of support to improve.

Under the system there are four categories – green, yellow, amber and red. Schools in the green category are deemed to be in need of the least support while schools in the red category are those identified as needing the most support.

Green schools require just four days of support and yellow schools receive up to 10 days of support. Schools categorised as amber receive up to 15 support and red schools up to 25 days.

Last year a change was made to the factors that decide a school’s category – meaning there is now a much broader assessment that considers a wider variety of information. This includes wellbeing and the quality of teaching and learning, rather than just looking at areas such as performance, including GCSE results.

This year’s performance data has seen the majority of Wrexham’s primary and secondary schools classified as either green or yellow.

Just three schools in the county borough – both of which are secondary – are categorised as red.

Commenting on the publication of today’s results, Cabinet Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams said: “I’m pleased to see that even more of our schools are now in the green and yellow categories, continuing on with the upward trend we have seen over the past few years.

“These schools have a key role to play in supporting other schools to improve by sharing their expertise, skills and good practice.

“The system has become more sophisticated over time and now allows for a much broader range of factors about a school’s ability to improve to be taken into account – leading to a tailored programme of support and intervention which meets the needs of all pupils.”
