Holocaust Memorial Day ‘Keep The Memory Alive’

A special event remembering those who suffered and lost their lives in The Holocaust, is to take place in Wrexham this afternoon.

Today symbolises Holocaust Memorial Day, a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in The Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in other countries in the world.

The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. Today’s event also marks the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust.

In Wrexham a memorial event will take place in Ty AVOW this afternoon (Tuesday 27th January) at 1:30pm. The theme for the day is “keep the memory alive”.

The commemoration will begin with a welcome by Leece Jones (chair of AVOW) who will be joined by Ian Lucas, MP, Catholic Bishop of Wrexham, Peter Bignall, Coleg Cambria students will sing Auschwitz songs and the Mayor will read a poem.

A two minute silence – followed by release of birds of peace will take place outside Ty Avow Building weather permitting.
