‘High demand’ has resulted in a number of ambulances queuing outside the Wrexham Maelor this afternoon – with the Health Board asking for patience and understanding during this ‘difficult situation’

A total of ten ambulances and one first response vehicle were seen queued outside the Emergency department at the Wrexham Maelor this afternoon – with reports of increased pressure at the hospital earlier this morning.

A Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board spokesperson said: “The Emergency Department at Wrexham Maelor Hospital is experiencing a very high demand today which means that some patients are waiting much longer to be admitted than we would like – we would like to apologise for this.

“Our staff are working incredibly hard to make sure that patients are getting the care they need and we can only ask for people’s patience and understanding while we try to manage this difficult situation.

“We currently have a number of ambulances waiting outside the Unit and are working with our Ambulance colleagues to bring these patients into the hospital. We would like to reassure the public that each patient is continually assessed, monitored and cared for by our Ambulance colleagues until they are transferred into the department.”

Members of the public are also being encouraged to support NHS Wales’ Choose Well campaign, and visit their GP or call NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47 for advice and treatment of most illnesses.

The spokesperson added: “Treatment for minor injuries, such as cuts, bites, stings and muscle and joint injuries, can be provided at your local Minor Injuries Unit, where there is no need for an appointment. Only dial 999 in a life-threatening emergency, if someone is seriously ill or injured or their life is at risk – remember to keep emergency ambulances for emergencies.”

Despite the increased demand at the Wrexham Maelor today, there has been praise for the work carried out by those working in the hospital, with Louise tweeting Wrexham.com earlier this morning to say: “Absolutely fantastic care and speedy at Wrexham Maelor A&E this morning! Well done.”
