Handover of Korean Standard to Wrexham Museum

The standard representing one of Wrexham’s veterans associations has joined its counterparts as Wrexham Museum as its bearer heads to the other side of the world.

Peter Archer, the standard bearer for the Korean Veterans, will soon emigrate to New Zealand to live with his son and family.

In preparation for his trip, Mr Archer handed the standard of the Korean Veterans Association to Wrexham Museum, to be held as part of it collection for later conservation.

The standard is one of four – along with those for the Eighth Army, Burma Star and Normandy Veterans Associations – which were the subject of a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2016 to ensure their restoration and permanent display at the Guildhall.

Wrexham Museum now holds the standards for the Korean, Eighth Army and Burma Star veterans’ associations, and these will soon be delivered to the People’s History Museum, Manchester, for preservation, mounting and framing in preparation for their relocation to the Council Chamber.

The fourth standard, representing the Normandy Veterans Association, will join the museum collection after the last surviving members of the association have passed away

Cllr David Griffiths, Armed Forces Champion for Wrexham Council, said: “I want to give my sincerest thanks to Mr Archer for passing the Korean standard on to Wrexham Museum, and we will do our utmost to ensure that it – along with all the other standards – is properly restored and given pride of place at the Guildhall.

“Thanks to the success of the crowdfunding campaign in 2016, we know that the people of Wrexham feel a lot of respect and affection for these standards and the veterans they represent.”
