Glyndwr University has launched an initiative that aims to boost the finances of prospective students during their studies.

The university, which has campuses in Wales and London, is launching a ‘cash boost’ initiative which will see students given £1,000 to help fund their studies in eight academic disciplines including engineering, business management, criminology and art and design.

The scheme will take effect from September 2013 and students will receive cash injections in two installments  £500 in September 2013 on enrollment and £500 in January 2014.

The funding will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis to UK students with a firm acceptance offer to study at the university.

It is the first time Glyndŵr University has embarked on such a scheme.

Head of recruitment and admissions, Julie Cowley, said: “As a university that’s committed to ensuring higher education is accessible to all, we are acutely aware of the financial backdrop underpinning the decisions students make when choosing a university and subject to study.

“That’s why we’ve taken the decision to launch our first cash boost scheme, which will see £1,000 placed back into the wallets of students who choose to study with us. We want to ensure that the unparalleled benefits of higher education remain foremost in the minds of prospective students when choosing to go to university – not the financial outlay.”

She added: “We are firm advocates of ensuring that anyone who could potentially benefit from higher education is given the opportunity to do so, and we hope our cash boost scheme helps shape the decisions of prospective students by removing a potential barrier to access.

“In addition, we want to move away from the tradition of financial incentives only being geared towards exceptionally high achievers; our cash boost scheme will benefit all individuals who choose to pursue higher education with us, in keeping with our ethos as an institution that’s committed to widening access.”

The university also has an open day on Saturday, June 1 from 10am where prospective students can find out more.
