A partnership between Glyndŵr University and a giant of education overseas will spearhead a revolutionary new ‘aerospace city’ in Malaysia, amongst other deals signed at the Farnborough Air Show.

Glyndŵr signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Asia Aerospace City (AAC), an economic and educational hub created by the Malaysian government agency Majlis Amanh Rakyat (known as MARA Aerotech.), to connect industry leaders through high quality engineering services, iconic infrastructure and national support.

Known as MARA, the agency will join Glyndŵr University in collaborating on the Professional Development Centre (PDC) Programme – one of six business offerings within AAC.

Another major signing that took place at the air show was a Memorandum of Understanding between AAC, Glyndŵr and BAE Systems on industrial collaboration for training programme-development and industrial research.

Glyndŵr and BAE Systems, the global aerospace, defence and security company, will work together to provide the postgraduate engineering qualification to students from MARA Aerotech.

The three parties are to explore joint opportunities for collaboration, through visits to BAE Systems’ Samlesbury and Warton sites, where students can find out more about carbon fibre composite techniques and processes, and get up close to aircraft including a Typhoon jet.

Other proposals are for mentoring, sector-based practical projects and technical and social engagements with graduates and apprentices to enhance student development.

Glyndŵr plans to open an engineering campus in Malaysia, to support the Malaysian Government’s strategy and its “employability skills programme” with industrial partners over the next two years.

Speaking at Farnborough Air Show, where the Memorandum of Understanding was signed, Phil Humphreys, BAE Systems’ Procurement Director – Industrialisation said: “BAE Systems is a global leader in carbon composite engineering.

“We’re delighted to be working with MARA Aerotech and Glyndŵr University to offer Malaysian students industry exposure in support of their post graduate engineering qualification.

In a further deal the Wrexham university and MBDA – Europe’s largest missile company – have agreed to develop a series of technology and management programmes with the cooperation of the Malaysian government agency Majlis Amanh Rakyat, known as MARA.

The aim is to recruit highly skilled engineers and effective defence technology managers to meet the country’s indigenous industrial and technological needs into the future.

The multi-nation missile systems organisation has more than 90 armed forces customers worldwide and is a market leader in the defence arena; the only group capable of designing and producing defence systems that correspond to the full range of current and future operational needs of the three armed forces – land, sea and air.

Glyndŵr University Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Scott, said the union with MBDA and MARA will launch a new era for engineering at the Wrexham institution.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be working alongside MBDA and MARA, two giants of defence, education and engineering,” said Prof Scott.

“There are major plans in the pipeline for engineering at Glyndŵr, and with us now placed in the top three universities in Wales, having recorded the country’s highest levels of student satisfaction in the Complete University Guide, we are in a great position to capitalise on these opportunities.

“We are also enjoying our highest ever position in the league tables, having moved up 44 places from 108 to 64 in this year’s Guardian University Guide – no mean feat considering Glyndŵr only became a university six years ago.”

He added: “The relationships we have secured at Farnborough Air Show will play a big part in the University’s future as a provider of top-class education with world class partners.”

The deals are subject to Glyndŵr University maintaining its Highly Trusted Sponsor status with the UK Visas and Immigration service.
