Wrexham Football Club have parted ways with manager Gary Mills.

Gary Mills was appointed on the 28th of April 2015 and had been under pressure after a lack lustre campaign last season, followed by a poor start this season.

Fans have questioned tactics deployed and the signings he made, with a greater focus on lack of player retention over the summer where his personal choice to offer now infamous one year deals rather than two year agreements saw a number of key players leave to league rivals.

At the time of his appointment Wrexham Football Club said they were looking for a manager to challenge for promotion as well as playing ‘exciting football’. The former has not happened, and the football has been at times dreadful at home games so far.

Pressure has mounted after some poor results and performances for a side that is looking to hunt promotion.

Wrexham drew to Chester in the local derby in a game that was widely panned for the lack of entertainment on show, with Wrexham managing a grand total of zero shots on target. A loss to Tranmere appears to have sealed his fate with another poor display.

Today the club have said: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Gary for his endeavours during his time at Wrexham AFC, having arrived at the Racecourse with the reputation of his teams playing open, attacking and attractive football, and previous success in gaining promotion from the Conference League.

“This was a difficult decision but despite some exciting and entertaining football last season, our main priority is promotion back to the Football League and we have not made the progress expected towards that aim, falling short of the play off places last season, and currently out of touch with the table leaders with a third of the season already gone.

“We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed.

“All other staff remain unaffected by this change.”

The decision comes hours before a members meeting by club owners, the fans, this evening.

Joey Jones, Andy Davies and Dean Keates will take charge of team affairs for this weekend’s visit to Stamford AFC.

At his unveiling press conference, pictured below, Mr Mills said, “There will be no excuses here. The club has everything you need to go and be successful”, as well as having a maintained budget there is indications Mills asked for further money to spend – which was approved.

The fans have however fulfilled their end of the bargain, with the Racecourse seeing top of the league attendances despite the poor performances on the pitch.

The hunt will now be on for a permanent replacement for Mills, who joins the likes of Dean Saunders, Andy Morrell and Kevin Wilkin in the annals of local football history.
