Pupils from a local secondary school are cultivating fresh fruit and vegetables thanks to a novel new project.

Rhosnesni High School recently launched their Fruit & Veg Garden Project and Wrexham’s AM Lesley Griffiths visited the school to meet with students and to see how the garden was growing.

A piece of unused land has been transformed, with new planting areas constructed for a variety of vegetables and plants, as well as a poly-tunnel for strawberries and tomatoes.

The students are creating and building the garden with help from staff, undertaking jobs such as sowing seeds, planting produce and constructing new apparatus.

Rhosnesni School benefited from the Welsh Government sponsored ‘Give and Gain Day’ project which encourages companies to volunteer for a day to help support their local community. The school’s Garden Project was supported by volunteers from Principality Building Society.

After sampling the strawberries, the students offered Lesley Griffiths AM a lettuce which became the first vegetable to be farmed from the recently-constructed planting areas. She said:

“Rhosnesni School’s Garden Project has already had a positive impact by encouraging pupils to be creative and promoting environmental issues. Everyone involved deserves a great deal of praise for all their hard work.”

“It was pleasing to hear how the garden project has also generated a real community spirit, with the school gratefully receiving donations from Rhosddu Allotment Association amongst other local partners.”

“The venture has certainly proved fruitful and if anyone believes they can support the project in whatever way, please contact the school.”
