Gallery: Thousands of people descend on Wrexham town centre for biggest Play Day event yet

Wrexham town centre was once again transformed into a giant play area this afternoon – with thousands of people descending on the area to take part in the annual Play Day event.

The free event, which takes place on the first Wednesday of August each year, aims to highlight a child’s right to play and encourages people to recognise the value of playing to children, their families and their local communities.

Each year organisers in Wrexham build on previous events to offer something bigger and better than before.

Today was no different, with Queen’s Square and Llwyn Isaf rammed with children and observing adults while they enjoyed the different of activities on offer.

One adult walking past told us, “This is crazy, this is what we used to have back when I was in school. It is fantastic, but nuts, I am jealous!”

Four teepees were setup around Llwyn Isaf along with a now traditional covered maze. Table tennis, full tennis, basketball and giant home made kerplunk sets were being well used by kids of all ages.

As usual one of the more popular activities was the slip and slide on Llwyn Isaf, which sees children slide down to the end before running back round to return to the end of the queue for another go.

One of the joys of Play Day is the way it encourages children to use their imagination, get creative and find out how things work.

Along with the chance to take apart some old computers and build a den from old pipes and sheets, one of the most popular attractions of the day involved building go karts from scratch.

With piles of wood, tools and the wheels from old wheelie bins, youngsters had the chance to create their own vehicles and race them around.

Once again the floor on Queens Square turned into lava, with children trying to make their way to the other side without falling in

Other activities on offer included a massive tug of war, circus games, the Plas Madoc graffiti van and the chance to throw wet sponges at people in the stocks – something which Cllr Andrew Atkinson, lead member for youth services and anti-poverty, happily volunteers to do.

There were also plenty of queues throughout the day from those who wanted to learn more about the police and have a sneak peak into one of their cars!
