Update: Five crews with aerial platforms tackled overnight ‘major fire’ at Kronospan in Chirk

Five fire crews were called to a major blaze at a factory in Chirk last night.

Shortly after 10pm last night Wrexham.com reported that a fire had broken out at Kronospan.

Update 9:40am North Wales Fire & Rescue have issued a longer statement on the incident, that reads: “Firefighters from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have attended a fire at Kronospan in Chirk. The call was received at 10pm on Tuesday 31st July.

“Crews from Deeside, Chirk, Llangollen, Wrexham and Johnstown and aerial ladder platforms from Wrexham and Rhyl attended. A crew from Oswestry, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended.”

“The fire was confined to the production area and was brought under control by 00.29hrs on Wednesday morning (1st August).”

“The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.”

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed five crews were called to the scene with two aerial ladder platforms.

A fire engine from Oswestry was also called to the scene.

The crews used one hose reel jet, four breathing apparatus and one thermal imaging camera to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was confined to an industrial chimney with a spokesperson for the fire service saying the cause is believed to be accidental, and possibly related to a transformer unit

Multiple fire crews have been in attendance at the Kronospan factory in Chirk overnight.

As of 1:45am there was no formal update available.

Firefighters were called to the blaze shortly after 10pm this evening, with a crew from Oswestry confirming they are assisting North Wales Fire and Rescue Service with a ‘property fire’, with other stations noting ‘there are multiple appliances and crews at the scene’.

It is believed two crews are attending from Flintshire/Chester direction as well as more local crews.

North Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service have also been sighted at the incident. As of midnight there is no official local update available.

‘Thick acrid smoke’ was reported by residents nearby, with praise for firefighters: “It was scary at first but the Firefighters don’t waste any time controlling it, they are brilliant, fair play.”

Local MP Susan Elan Jones is aware of the incident and has said she will be following up with Wrexham Council and Kronospan about the fire.

Two fire crews were heard heading towards Wrexham on the A55 just after 10pm, with this believed to be the only fire in the Wrexham area this evening.
