Financial boost and police support for two Wrexham summer projects

Two summer projects in Wrexham have received funding from the North Wales Police and Community Trust to help keep children occupied and teach them new skills during the summer holidays.

In conjunction with AVOW, the ‘Garden Gang’, based at The Land adventure playground in Plas Madoc has been awarded £500 PACT funding towards a scheme in which up to 24, five to 16 year olds will be involved in project support to design, build and paint planters which will be distributed around the community.

The project aims is to improve the quality of life for the community and improve dietary choices by giving children and residents access to free fruit and vegetables.

The idea is to transform landscapes and improve disused plots by providing healthy food. In addition the planters will enhance the appearance of the estate, making it healthier, safer and cleaner.

Commenting on the scheme, Insp Darren Whibberley said: “This is a great project which will help instil community pride and has the potential to encourage a sense of ownership.”

Meanwhile £500 of PACT funding has also been given to a Forest Fun Days scheme at Ty Mawr County Park in Cefn Mawr, teaching children bush-craft, safe fire-lighting, cooking skills and den- building.

The forest school sessions are run by Campfire Cymru, a social enterprise providing outdoor and environmental education for children, families and young people, especially those who experience disadvantages.

The park already has established Junior Ranger groups for young people aged 8-13 and an active forest schools groups supporting families with disabilities, autism, ADHD and additional needs.

This project combines the skills gained running these groups and the youth club to engage with the slightly older visitors.
