Update Wednesday 19th June:

The old Groves site is now totally clear, including the sports hall, as demolition has now been completed as pictured above.

There is also an active petition to turn the older building, to the right of this photo, into an art centre. You can read more about this here.

Original Story Below:
Last December we were the first to report that parts of the old Groves School were to be demolished, with the formal demolition plans being submitted in January.

Over the last few weeks work has been taking place stripping out glasswork and other elements of the buildings, however in the last few days the building itself has had the full demolition treatment.

Today saw the final removal of the main ‘new’ building which had the 1960’s concrete design. Workmen with drills ripped the building to pieces, with jets of water being used to control any dust.

The building as of around 10am this morning.

Only large bits of concrete remain ready for crushing.

The sports hall is next to come down, with basketball hoops just about still intact.

With the buildings removed new views have emerged - this one looking towards the Police station.

The older Girls School buildings are being retained and do not come under the demolition plans. Those buildings have covenants on them to ensure they only get used for educational purposes.

One local resident has mentioned to us that they believe the next ‘concrete monstrosity’ to be removed is the Police Station. They also suggested that the Old Girls School could be an ideal replacement due to its central location, larger rooms and plenty of parking!

There is the excellent Old Wrexhamians website (click here to view it) of the association for former pupils and staff of both Grove Park Grammar Schools.
