There’s a chance to explore Wrexham’s mining heritage and learn more about an exciting renovation project currently underway in the town this weekend.

North Wales Miner’s Association Trust and Wrexham Warehouse Project are working together for a double open day at two historical sites Sunday 30th July.

Between 10am and 4pm the trust will be opening the gates of Bersham Colliery for a fascinating insight into Wrexham’s mining history.*

The colliery was the last of the Wrexham pits to close when the last tub of coal was raised in December 1986.

On the same day the Wrexham Warehouse Project will be running a minibus service from Bersham Colliery for those wishing to see the work in progress at the Grade II listed Mines Rescue Station on Maesgwyn Road.

The Mines Rescue Centre opened in 1913 to train men in helping find survivors of mining accidents. The centre closed in the 1980s and was handed to the fire service and subsequently entered private ownership. Most recently it has been a derelict building, almost subject to an illegal demolition in 2010 after its listing.

Recently described as the ‘last chance saloon’, the building is now undergoing extensive renovation works after members of Wrexham Council’s planning committee unanimously backed plans to convert the property into two self-contained apartments and seven bedsits for young people facing homelessness or leaving care.

The plans, which were submitted by local charity the Wrexham Warehouse Project, also include the development of a museum and cafe.

Work on the building began the day after the planning committee granted approval, so this weekend’s opening day will offer an insight into the work that has been taking place over the past two weeks.

Ex Mines Rescue & Fire Service personnel will be particularly welcomed to provide their input with memories and to share photographs and memorabilia.

There is free entry and parking at the colliery for this weekend’s event.

*There may be limited access to the Engine House due to ongoing renovation work.
