A FOI by Wrexham.com has revealed the results in criminal record checks for those looking to work in Wrexham’s education system with only 4.8% containing convictions or cautions.

We asked for the data on Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, formally a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, for those applying and training to become teachers in Wrexham from April 1st 2013 to the end of 2014.

The data unit includes information for those applying to be teachers, teaching assistants, caretakers, dinner ladies, deputy head teachers, classroom assistants, head of years, substitute/agency teacher and the like.

Overall there were 3377 checks made in that period, with 94 certificates containing conviction and or caution information, and 163 with convictions and/or cautions found. The same applicant however may have submitted more than one application in the specified time period.

The highest result was for those offending for ‘driving a motor vehicle with excess alcohol’ (27) , and ‘Assault’ classified as Actual Bodily Harm with 12 results.

The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) does not own the Police National Computer (PNC) record of convictions and cautions. The system held by the DBS is known as a ‘PNC Extract’ which is used for matching the applicant’s details against a record. The extract contains basic identifying details such as name and date of birth of persons included on the PNC. The extract does not contain any conviction information. The police force both own and maintain all information contained on the PNC.

The DBS is unable to confirm if any of the individuals were employed as a result of the information being included on a certificate as the DBS has no involvement in any recruitment decision made. The recruitment decision is made by the employer or other relevant body.
