Cyclist To Travel From Toulouse To Chester In Charity Fundraiser

A keen cyclist is preparing for a journey that will see him cycle from the South of France to Chester in aid of a local charity.

Keith Ward, who has been cycling for around three years will cycle around 1100km in five days to raise funds for Wrexham based charity Hope House Children’s Hospice.

Over the five day period in June, Keith will be cycling alone for around 10 hours per day.

In April last year Keith was involved in an accident on his way to work whereby he was hit by a car. Since then, Keith has wanted to challenge himself and raise money for a good cause.

Keith’s partner, Gemma Ward told Wrexham.com: “He was out of action for some time, but was determined that the accident wouldn’t affect him getting back on his bike, although it is something he thinks about every time he goes out on the road.

“We recently moved to Toulouse in the South-West of France and ever since arriving here, he has wanted to do the journey back to his home town, Wrexham on his bicycle.”

Gemma added: “Keith chose Hope House Children’s Hospices as it is a local charity to where he grew up and after a bit of research, reading up on what they do there, he had a lump to his throat and he thought, right that’s who I’m raising money for.”

Planning for the event began at the start of the year, with the route seeing Keith cycle from Toulouse in South-West France, heading North to Caen Ferry Port, stopping off at Angouleme and Ecommoy. Then getting the ferry over to Portsmouth, with one last stop off in Tewkesbury before the final leg up to Wrexham / Chester.

Training for the event has taken place over the past few months, with rides ranging between two and seven hours at a time.

Gemma said: “The training is going really well at the moment, which has helped him to gain confidence back on the bike, he’s been helped out a lot by friends and colleagues that cycle with him on occasions.”

So far Keith has raised £697.51 of his £1,100 target. On his JustGiving Page Keith writes: “I can’t wait to get on my bike and start ticking off the miles. It’s been a plan of mine to complete a challenge and raise some money for a great cause.

“If you have made a donation, thank you very much! If you haven’t, please, as Hope House Children’s Hospices do some amazing work and all of the money I raise will go towards helping them carry this on.”
