A new independent cafe with a creative twist has opened in Wrexham town centre.

EmzCakes, The Creative Cafe has recently opened on Chester Street and offers homemade cakes, gifts and cake decorating workshops for children.

The cafe has been opened by cake maker, Emma Wilson – who up until recently has been baking celebration and event cakes from her home.

The cafe specialises in freshly baked cakes, with flavours ranging from chocolate fudge cake, cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip and lemon; as well as various gluten free options. Homemade celebration cakes can also be ordered in store.

Last week Wrexham.com popped in for a chat with Emma, who described the local response to her cafe as ‘amazing’, noting that there are already regular visitors to the store throughout the week.

Emma told Wrexham.com: “People said I was crazy opening a shop in Wrexham, but someone has to do it.

“On Charles Street and Chester Street there are lots of independent retailers close together. There is a sense of community. The town has gone away from the market side and people seem to want more independent shops in Wrexham.”

The idea behind the cafe’s theme came as a result of Emma and her partner entering ‘Test Town’, an enterprise scheme that encourages young entrepreneurs to creative ‘innovative’ new businesses to help ‘bring energy back to flagging town centres’.

Emma said: “I had been telling my other half about this crazy idea for a cake shop and a creative cafe

“We entered a competition called Test Town last year and were picked to make the final 10 out of the 500 applications. We went up to Dunfermline in Scotland and were given a £1000 grant and an empty retail unit.

“We had to set up for four days. I baked over 600 cupcakes and within two days they had all been sold.

“It was such an invaluable experience, I wouldn’t have had the guts to open my own cafe otherwise.”

The cafe also supports local traders and designers, offering shelf space to those who want to sell their home made / custom made products.

Currently the cafe sells birthday / greeting cards, custom made magnets, children’s toys, personalised frames and gifts. However it is hoped that additional space for new designers will be available soon.

Emma said: “I have always been crafty and arty, but I never found my outlet. Cakes is that for me. I have made lots of friends through events and I want to support home businesses, as that was once me.”

Over the summer the summer, Emma will also be holding creative workshops for children, with lampshade decorating, cupcake decorating and card making classes available for children to take part in.

EmzCakes – The Creative Cafe is open 10am – 4pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
