A councillor has branded the investment in a bus interchange at Wrexham General Railway Station a waste of money after local bus operator Arriva withdrew its services.

Public money was spent on a new bus layby, shelter and roundabout at the station to allow bus operators to serve it.

However, following Arriva’s withdrawal Brymbo Councillor Paul Rogers has said the removal of services will make the station less accessible to users of public transport.

He said: “The removal of services to the railway station will make it less accessible and difficult for some public transport users.

“Passengers must now be questioning why so much money was spent on this project when it could have demonstrated more value for money elsewhere.

“If bus operators are not prepared to use the interchange then consideration should be given to more beneficial uses such as converting the area back to parking which is in high demand.”

Wrexham Council defended the decision to invest money in the bus interchange and pointed out that the “Shoppa Hoppa” bus still operates via Wrexham General.

A council spokesperson said: “It is unfortunate that Arriva have withdrawn their service from Wrexham General Station. However the town centre “Shoppa” service continues to use the stop to provide a direct connection between the station and the town centre including the bus station, High Street and Eagles Meadow.”
