A councillor is calling for urgent action following another near miss on a dangerous stretch of road in Gwersyllt.

In May we reported how Councillor for Gwersyllt West Arfon Jones was campaigning for safety improvements on Summerhill Road near Pendine Nursing Home, where there is currently a narrow 450m stretch of road with no pavement.

Last Saturday afternoon Connor Evans, a 17 year old student at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd who lives in Gwersyllt, was riding his 125cc motorbike along Summerhill Road from the Mold Road roundabout when he had a near miss with a car.

He said: “I was doing about 40mph past Pendine going into the narrow bit and into the left hand bend when I had to slam on my brakes as a car had stopped just beyond the bend. I only managed to stop with inches to spare.”

He added: “It really frightened me and had the road been wet I would have skidded and gone over the top of the car. I then saw that the car had stopped to avoid colliding with a motorised wheelchair user. This road is not only dangerous to pedestrians but also cyclists and motorcyclists and something must be done about it.”

Councillor Jones said: “How many near misses does it take before some urgent action is taken to improve this road?

“Although the council have not made a committment to improve this stretch of road as yet, I will continue to campaign for improvements. The campaign enjoys enormous local support with 300 people having signed a petition up to now and also unanimous support from Gwersyllt Community Council and the owners and management of the Pendine Care Organisation.”

Wrexham Council’s Head of Environment, John Bradbury said: “The council are aware of a long standing desire to improve pedestrian provision in many sites throughout the county borough, with this particular location being one of these.

“We have explored the possibility for improving this area. However there is insufficient space within the boundaries of the available highway land. Transport improvements that require land purchase or other statutory procedures are longer term aspirations and are considered as and when opportunities arise.

“It is important to note that there have been no recorded accident injuries on this stretch of road in the last five years.”
