Local residents, staff and students at Wrexham Glyndŵr University joined forces this week to take part in a community clean-up of Crispin Lane.

The event, organised by Wrexham county councillor for Grosvenor ward Marc Jones was supported by Wrexham Glyndŵr University as well as members of the local community.

Held on Tuesday 27th March, the clean-up on Crispin Lane involved a group of volunteers with litter pickers and bags picking up rubbish along the lane, which runs next to the university’s Plas Coch campus.

Wrexham Glyndŵr Univerity’s Director of Operations Lynda Powell, who led the university’s clean-up team, explained that the institution has a “commitment to understanding and managing its impact on the environment.”

“We have dedicated ‘green champions’ who work to make everyone at the university more environmentally aware,” continued Lynda.

“We were delighted to rise 50 places in the People and Planet University League 2017, moving from 132nd to 83rd.

“Our green commitment has included energy saving systems, work to increase biodiversity by planting shrubs and new recycling facilities. Sometimes, it’s good to apply those principles to our immediate area – and it was nice to give Crispin Lane a bit of a spring clean.

“I’m pleased that staff and students from Wrexham Glyndŵr University pitched in to lend their support.”

Wrexham Glyndŵr University Students’ Union Vice President Angus Hamill-Stewart added: “Events like these give students a chance to make the world a better place. What better place to start than on our doorstep?”

Councillor Marc Jones, who represents the Grosvenor ward, said: “This is the third community clean-up I’ve organised in the ward and I’m very grateful to residents and Glyndŵr University staff and students who turned out to help clean-up Crispin Lane.

“I hope everyone who uses the area will respect the hard work put in by local people to tidy up their community and we can reduce litter on our streets. These are small steps to restoring a pride in the community.”
