Trading Standards are warning Wrexham residents to be on their guard about cold callers who are trying to sell wall and roof treatments.

Trading Standards have been contacted by householders to tell them that cold callers have made claims, backed up with information leaflets, that the treatments will improve insulation, save energy, reduce damp and protect from flooding.

In cases seen by Trading Standards costs have ranged from nearly £4000 to nearly £6000. Typically the caller will be keen to sign up there and then for work to be done and take a deposit.

Trading Standards are urging everyone to be alert and to look out for their more vulnerable friends, family and neighbours.

If you get a call, or find out that callers have been to anyone you know, please report it.

The law provides a “cooling off” period for cold calling which gives the householder a short time to change their mind after signing.

If you, or anyone you know has signed up, there may still be time to cancel, even if work has already started or been completed. In some circumstances there will also be a right to recover money paid even if work has already been done.

For help in this situation, and to report callers, ring Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 08454 040506 (040505 for Welsh)

Trading Standards ask everyone to think very carefully before signing up for or buying anything from people who cold call at your door. Don’t be pressured into buying or signing up for anything. Give yourself time to think about it and don’t be swayed by price reductions that are only available if you sign up on the spot.
