Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones has called for an urgent meeting with the Post Office in a bid to find a solution to the closure of their Bangor-on-Dee service.

The Post Office in Bangor-on-Dee, which is embedded in the village shop, ‘The Middle Shop’ is due to close on October 1st.

After being contacted by concerned representatives from the area, the Clwyd South MP said: “This is a tremendous local business, which offers a vital post office services to the residents in this part of the constituency.

“I’m not happy about some of the changes being made nationally to the Post Office and I shall be making formal representations to them on this matter. Local businesses like this deserve our support.

“They are the heart of the local community and the national Post Office should treat them properly”.

Local businesswoman, Edith Williamson, said: “Bangor-on-Dee is a thriving village, but has an ageing population. It relies heavily on the Post Office. I personally do my banking there and send about 11–12 parcels a week.

“If we lose the Post Office in Overton and the one in Bangor-on-Dee, we would have to travel six miles one way or eight the other to buy a stamp”.

As well as formal representations, Ms Jones MP also plans to present a petition to highlight this situation in Parliament.

However the Post Office say the closure will be temporary and that it is looking at options to reinstate the service in Bangor-on-Dee

A Post Office spokesperson said “Following the resignation of the Postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use Bangor Isycoed Post Office will temporarily close on 1 October 2017.

“We know how important Post Office services are to people in the community and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused. Any customers wishing to access Post Office services may do so from any convenient Post Office branch, including:

• Overton Post Office
• Pentre Maelor Post Office

“We would like to assure customers that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community following the closure.

“In exploring this, it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office.”
