‘Cloak And Dagger’ As Yellow Lines Appear Overnight To Stop High Street Parking

The free parking on Wrexham’s High Street appears to have been stopped following the overnight introduction of yellow lines and apparently clearer signage.

Shoppers in the town centre had been using parts of the High Street to park after it was revealed in October last year that the signage on the street did not meet the required standard to formally issue tickets.

The new yellow lines on the right side of the High Street appeared overnight, Wrexham.com was having a drink in the Crafty Dragon (and we hoped to test their quiz too but it was called off!) and saw work taking place as we left later that evening and are told it continued through the night.

When we popped down to the High Street yesterday afternoon most of the left hand side of the street remained coned off, with only a couple of cars parked at the end of the road.

new-signs

‘Clearer’ signage stating that the road is a ‘pedestrian zone’ Monday – Friday between 11:30am and 5pm, Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 1pm-5pm, aside from coaches and loading. It appears a reversion back to the loading and blue badge only parking as it was meant to be, with access for buses.

The roadworks and new yellow lines appear to have come to a surprise to some shoppers and businesses owners in the area, who knew nothing about the works taking place until yesterday morning, one telling us they had not been notified or seen any notice calling it a ‘cloak and dagger’ operation.

Wrexham.com queried with Wrexham Council if the changes meant shoppers could no longer park on the street and where the notice for the works was placed – however these details were not provided.

Cllr David Bithell, Lead Member for Place – Environment and Transport however did offer a comment saying: “Following a number of enquiries raised by members of the public, the Council has introduced supplementary road markings and traffic signs to aid awareness and understanding of the existing access and parking restrictions in force on High Street.”
