A restaurant run by Chester Races, who also operate a racecourse in Wales, declared today ‘Australia Day’ and encouraged customers to cheers against Wales provoking a strong response on social media.

An initial jokey tweet referring to the prompt exit of England from their own World Cup had no replies:

However a further tweet and Facebook post specifically asking people to cheer against Wales, saying “Come and cheer on #AUS as they take on #WAL! ” went down badly with several negative replies, despite a wider invite earlier saying “Full day of #RugbyWorldCup come in support your team”.

The White Horse restaurant ‘a Chester Racecourse company brand’ is situated on the Chester Racecourse site, and confirmed in the latest statement of accounts of the £26m turnover Chester Race Company Ltd, not only operates in Chester but also 100% owns Bangor-on-Dee Races Ltd.

Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse is of course, in Wales.
