Tonight Charlotte Church tops the billing at Central Station as part of the Focus Wales Festival 2013. Earlier today, away from the commotion on Chester Street, we popped over to Glyndwr University where Charlotte was being interviewed as part of the Focus Wales Conference which sits alongside the festival itself.

Now 27, Church reflected on her success at the age of just 12 with fondness but was “fed up by the time I was 16.” This led her to the eventual release of her first pop solo album entitled ‘Tissues & Issues’, but even then she claims she was still naive throughout the production process.

More recently, things have taken more of a folk rock turn for Church who plans to release up to 5 EP’s as part of an entirely self-funded project.

“It’s much better to have total control as I do now. I’m not sure I could ever go back to a record label as I feel jaded by the experience. My aim now is not necessarily to be successful, but make the music I want to make.”

Church was quizzed on the luxury of her new-found artistic freedom, and the fact that perhaps her previous commercial success was the key enabler for such freedom. She accepted circumstances would be ‘incredibly difficult’ for those wanting to break into the music industry fiercely determined to retain a large portion of freedom in what they do.

It was clear that this freedom allowed to her was something Church was prepared to relish, even down to sourcing band members and equipment.

“Wales is massively important to me and I’ve tried to keep everything as local as possible in terms of sourcing.”

This even extended to using the forest adjacent to her home to shoot her latest video, as well as kids from the local area. Though the video itself all went to plan, Charlotte told the audience how her skin suffered an allergic reaction to her makeup on the day of the shoot, leading her to look like a ‘blotchy red leopard’.

Her current music has drawn criticism and controversy from some circles, sparked by a recent appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show. However, Church brushed this off saying she’s never been happier and more content with her music.

For those attending her headline gig this evening, fans will get to hear some new material, a special cover, and a promise from Church that there will be some ‘rocking out’. On occasion not to be missed.
