A primary school in Wrexham has been celebrating 50 years of teaching young people from the local area

The Rofft School, in Marford, opened in September 1970 as an Infant School with just 42 pupils. It celebrated its official opening a few months later on 20 November.

Last Friday, 50 years after opening, the school’s 232 pupils are took a well-earned break from lessons with a party themed day and challenge bake off with virtual celebration cakes.

The celebrations will continue throughout the year with a variety of projects around the theme of 50.

Although it may not be the year that was first envisaged, but pupils and staff are rising to the challenge of the virtual world and are looking forward to a time when they can welcome visitors back into the school for a more traditional anniversary party.

John Leece Jones, chair of governors at the school, said he was honoured and proud to have been associated with The Rofft for upwards of 30 years.

He said: “The Rofft has provided the children of Marford with a first class education for all of its 50 years.

“In that time there have only been three headteachers, Mrs Eileen Jackson who was the first headteacher and guided the school for well over 25 years, John Davies who became Wrexham’s chief education officer and our current headteacher Mr. Geraint Morris.

“All three headteachers have been assisted by a dedicated and talented staff and by committed and supportive parents in providing a wonderful start in life for our pupils.”

Lead Member for Education, Cllr Phil Wynn, added: “Many congratulations to the Rofft School on this wonderful anniversary. I’m sure that many people have very fond memories of their time there and on behalf of Wrexham Council I wish them another 50 successful years of teaching young people in the area.”
