Cashpoint Concern As Money Goes Missing
Concerns have been raised over a cash point in the town centre, with money going missing after it has been used.
The person affected got in touch with Wrexham.com to raise awareness of possible cash point problems around town, she said: “The Co-Op cash point by the bus station ate my card for no reason then switched off.
“All my money had been taken out. I have called the bank and they put me in touch with the fraud team.”
We have been told that since this incident the bank refunded the missing money last night, but have not provided further detail to how the incident occurred.
The cashpoint itself has prompted a few Wrexham.com readers to say they have had problems including one saying they used it normally but the requested money was not provided, another saying ‘it always spits my card out, never gives me the money.’
Although we have been unable to confirm with the police or the bank if it was a ‘skimming’ problem, we have heard issues locally over the last few months of strange problems with cash points. Just under a year ago there was a formal warning by Cheshire Police to cash point fraud on Sealand Road in Chester, with a warning extending to Llangollen.
Back in 2011 there was a wider problem where several thousand pounds was stolen and spent in America from cards used in Wrexham.
General advice for using cards includes:
- Check your statements every so often and keep an eye out for odd transactions.
- Looking out for ‘test’ purchases of low amounts can indicate a possible future fraud attempt.
- Check cash points for anything that looks suspicious – and report it if you see anything!
- Cover your PIN as you enter it.
- Do not accept help or distractions from people around cash points.
- Do not let your card leave your sight, get people to bring payment machines to you.

UPDATE: On our Facebook page one person has said ‘My Mum had her card cloned at the machine by Plas Coch boots last week.’
