A car ended up in the canal in Froncysyllte yesterday afternoon after a handbrake cable snapped.

The Aqueduct Inn which is in Fron with view of the canal tweeted the below picture saying “Not the best place to put the car. Glad nobody was in it!”

There is a car park close to the pub, which is the south leg of the canal below the aqueduct where it is thought the car moved from.

One cyclist called Andy who was in the area from Walsall took the top picture, and the one below and said he saw an attempt to move the car by nudging it with a hire boat.

The Aqueduct Inn tweeted further to say the incident occurred around 4pm this afternoon, and they “think it rolled off the slipway but not 100% sure. We just saw it sinking…!”

Police were called to the scene to assist.

(This article has been updated today – Saturday – as the owner of the vehicle has got in touch to say the hand brake was not left off, but the cable for the handbrake had snapped, thankfully the car was dragged out by a recovery truck! )
