Calls have been made to tackle road safety problems on the A5/A483 accident hotspot.

The request was made by Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones who last week called on the Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns MP to prioritise solving road safety problems on the A5/A483 road.

The particular stretch of road between Ruabon and Chirk has seen a number of serious accidents in recent years, with residents and social media users often calling for Wrexham Council and the government to implement measures to improve motorist safety.

Traffic and congestion issues are also a regular occurrence on the stretch of road, with motorists regularly facing delays both in and out of peak times.

Speaking in the House of Commons, the Clwyd South MP asked the Secretary of State to focus on “the stretch of road between Oswestry going right up to Wrexham and especially the road safety problems near Chirk”.

Responding Mr Cairns said: “It is something which has crossed discussions over the North Wales growth deal and underlines the interconnectivity of that region in particular with Manchester, Merseyside and North Wales.

“We are working closely with Welsh Government on their infrastructure plans and the national infrastructure plans for the whole of the United Kingdom – it is important they dovetail appropriately.”

Speaking afterwards, Susan Elan Jones MP said: “There’ve been a shocking number of serious collisions at and near the Halton roundabout. But the real road safety problems will not be solved unless authorities on both sides of the border work together.

“In the short term, we need to see a strict no overtaking rule enforced, but longer term, we need major changes to manage traffic on that stretch of road.”
