A petition calling on Wrexham Council to open empty buildings to provide shelter for the homeless this winter has exceeded 1000 signatures.

The ‘Open Up Empty Buildings in Wrexham’ petition was launched around 48 hours ago and has already generated a wealth of supportive comments – receiving the backing of more than 1000 supporters.

Addressing Wrexham Council, the petition states: “I cannot imagine sleeping rough in driving, biting winds, snow, ice and winter rain. It’s inhumane. It’s also inexcusable when we have so many empty buildings.”

The petition comes off the back of a decision by Manchester City Council, who earlier this month announced that empty council buildings would be opened up and used as overnight shelters for the homeless across the city.

Homeless organisations will be able to refer those in need to the temporary accommodation, which will provide over 160 additional beds.

Speaking about the launch of the online campaign, Cllr Ian Roberts, Lead Member for Housing, said: “We will be happy to accept the petition.”
