A former Coleg Cambria beauty and nail student and WorldSkills silver medal winner is using the skills she learnt during her time at college to run her own very successful business.

Sophie Quirk was a student at the college for three years, gaining her beauty and advanced nail enhancement qualifications before leaving and starting her own beauty and nail business.

Whilst studying at the college, Sophie was approached to compete in the WorldSkills heats for nail services. Whilst reticent at first, Sophie decided to take a chance and entered the competition.

From this she was invited to compete in the competition final in Birmingham where she won a silver medal.

Since leaving Sophie has continued to have support from the enterprise team at Coleg Cambria.

Sophie said: “Everything about my business has blossomed since the competition. It all fell into place. Having the medal confirms the quality and looking back my confidence and belief in myself has grown.”

Lynn Williams, enterprise champion at Coleg Cambria added: “Sometimes all it takes is the confidence in your ability.

“Sophie has the skills, she is a wonderful beautician and nail technician, but needed the confirmation that winning the medal gave her to realise this and take the plunge into self-employment.

“We will continue to support her whenever and wherever she needs it.”
