Boxing Day Snowfall Hits Area
The predicted snowfall for Boxing Day actually occurred with an initial late afternoon blast, and further dustings through the evening.
Our updates from Boxing Day 2014 can be found below, with the latest at the top and earliest at the bottom….
Midnight: Snow has turned to sleety rain in town, with a light melt starting as a result. The band of snow is passing east, with another rain/sleet band to follow:
One final great picture, this time of some good work tonight in Marford!

11pm: The Met Office latest update has extended the snow prediction into the early hours of tomorrow morning now, rather than just until 1am. The update timeframe is below, with the formal warning saying: “An area of rain, sleet and snow is affecting the area before clearing eastwards overnight. Some uncertainty surrounds how much snow will occur, but several centimetres of snow are likely even at low levels, especially in a swathe through Wales and the Midlands. As precipitation clears, roads could turn very icy.”
10:35pm It has not hit the highs of a snowmageddon but that does not excuse the lack of rulers-in-snow pics, so to correct that we have just popped out and taken two random samples at the north of the town! One showing 1 inch and the other is just under 2!
10:10pm GHA Buses have said: “As a result of snowfall on Friday evening and forecast for more overnight. Some of our early morning services may be disrupted on Saturday morning dependent on road conditions, we will do out best to get services running as soon as conditions allow”
Arriva and others have not posted any updates despite the snowfall.
Looking around on social media it appears GHA, Wrexham Council and two Councillors (Cllr Bithell and Cllr Paul Rogers) are the only ones offering updates and information this evening.
9:15pm It is still what we would term ‘a little bit sleety but not the fluffy flakes that we had before’ snow outside in town at the moment, with the deluge of ‘heavy snow’ as forecast not hitting us down here yet. However up in higher areas of Wrexham there has been stronger stuff! Temperatures are due to hit 0C in a couple of hours…
We have more comments, pictures and a video below…
On our Facebook Page people are debating gritting with some saying stuff like Claire who asked: “The roads are terrible why haven’t they been gritted?”, and others such as Amanda saying: “The road gritters have been out and still are. They cant be on every single road all at once. i have seen them in penycae since 4pm.”
Julie pointed out: ” I don’t know of gritters doing any estates. Back in the day there was community spirit and residents would clear the roads to get out onto the main drag. Those days are long gone. Unfortunately.”
@benbluenose79 @wrexham Just driven from bury. A483 better than m60 etc and saw 2 gritters (1 of them in Wrexham borough). Thumbs up

Ali Owen let us know about this video she has uploaded:
8:10pm There has been a sprinkle of more snow covering up tracks in town from earlier on. We have also had an update sent over just after 8pm from Councillor David A Bithell, the Lead Member for Environment and Public Protection.
Cllr Bithell said: “Who said Wrexham council will be continuing to salt all priority routes during the next few hours where more snow is forecast later this evening.
“The snow should ease in the early hours of Saturday morning although there will be flurries.
“Wrexham council gritters will in the early hours start treating side roads in preparation for refuse collections for Saturday morning (as per calendar).
“It is our intention to operate the refuse service as planned but this will depend on the weather and road conditions. Our on call manager will be monitoring weather conditions throughout the night.
“Please take care if your journey is absolutely necessary.”
7:30pm Looking ahead at the weather radar two bands of snow are due to pass through, one over the next half hour as below, hitting mainly higher ground. The second is due around 9:30pm and will head from a more northerly direction and currently shows more snow on lower ground.
6:38pm : The Met Office have extended the timeframe of snow tonight until just before 1am.
Wrexham FC won 1-0 away at Southport today with many fans now making the journey back into snow:

5:30pm The snow has stopped in town – but remember the forecast is for ‘Heavy Snow’ from 7pm onwards…
We have just been for a walk & very short drive and the below picture tells its own story, the main roads are fine for slow travel if flat but non-gritted or unused roads are dodgy.
Other pictures and comments we have been sent:
Rachel says “There’s been a decent dollop in Llangollen Rural and roads sound bad”
Jen sent this picture saying : “The Ruthin Rd out of Coedpoeth. Car’s being pushed up the hill .”
