People in Wrexham are being warned to be on their guard for bogus water board officials after two distraction burglaries took place in the area over the weekend.

An elderly woman was left in distress after two men posing as water board officials tricked their way into the home at Dee Park in Holt at around 4.45pm on Saturday afternoon.

The men routed through her belongings before making off with a small amount of cash. The woman was left unhurt, but distressed.

In the second incident, which took place in Southsea at 6.30pm, two men also posing as water board officials forced an elderly man to handover a small amount cash from his wallet leaving him badly shaken by the experience.

It is alleged that the man realised what was happening during the incident so one man held him down while the other went around the house.

A local source said that they believed the elderly man may have been targeted specifically as no other doors on the street were knocked on.

The offenders in the Southsea incident were described as in their early thirties, about 5ft 9ins tall and of slim build. Both had Irish accents and were wearing long dark trench coats.

It is unknown at this stage if the two crimes are linked.

Chief Inspector Mark Pierce said: “These were nasty incidents on vulnerable people. Officials from any legitimate organisation will carry proper identification which can be checked before people engage with them. We would ask neighbours and relatives of elderly or vulnerable people to make sure that they know what to do when people call.”

North Wales Police has advised residents to remember the Stop, Chain, Check system:

Stop and think – if you’re not expecting a caller and they don’t have an appointment – don’t let them into your home.

Chain – use the door chain before opening the front door.

Check – ask to see identification and double-check this by calling the company they are representing, before letting anyone into your home.

If in any doubt – call 999 immediately.

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact North Wales Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
