Attacks by pupils on teachers in Wrexham schools led to 86 exclusions over a three year period a Wrexham.com FOI has revealed.

The stats show that in the county borough’s secondary schools 48 pupils were excluded between 2007-10 for assaulting staff members.

Surprisingly the town’s primary school’s aren’t far behind with 38 pupils banned from school for violent offences towards teachers.

The 2007/8 school year was the worst year for such incidents totalling 31, with 2008/9 not far behind with 30 and 2009/10 on 25.

The figures do not show the whole picture with regards to teacher attacks either, as Wrexham Council only records teacher attacks if they lead to an exclusion from school.

We also queried whether any of the incidents had left staff requiring medical treatment and if any weapons were used, but the authority said it did not hold such data.

Last week we broke the news that police were called into Ysgol Clywedog after a pupil was found in possession of a knife.

For overall exclusions Wrexham’s figures are amongst the worst in Wales; data released late last year showed that more than 1,200 pupils had been excluded from Wrexham schools in 2011, of which 381 were for violent incidents.

Rhosnesni High School handed out the most with 282 pupils excluded.

According to Wrexham council’s website fixed-term exclusions can be issued for up to 45 days during which time pupils must not enter school premises.
