Another public park in Wrexham has been given a prestigious award – marking it as one of the best-looking and visitor-friendly parks in the country.

Acton Park joined the list of Green Flag-awarded parks in Wrexham, as Keep Wales Tidy unveiled its list of parks either receiving or retaining the award in 2016.

Those parks in Wrexham retaining the award from 2016 were Bellevue Park, the Nant Mill Visitor Centre, Alyn Waters Country Park, Ponciau Banks Park and Ty Mawr County Park.

Other sites were also recognised, with the Wrexham Incredible Edible project, Plas Pentwyn, Maes y Pant and St Mary’s Churchyard, Chirk, taking the Green Flag Community Award – all of which received the award for the first time this year.

Wrexham received its first Green Flag Awards in 2005, when Ty Mawr and Bellevue Park both reached the high standard required.

This was followed in 2006 when Alyn Waters joining the prestigious group which was closely followed by Nant Mill Visitor Centre.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment, said: “I’m very pleased to see that Acton Park has joined the ranks of five of our other parks and public spaces in earning the Green Flag Award for 2016 – as well as those taking the Green Flag Community Award.

“We’re very proud of our parks in Wrexham. Green areas and public open spaces are very important to local people, and I commend the efforts of all employees, volunteers and communities who have done their best to ensure we not only retained our Green Flags at those parks which have already received awards, but also added Acton park.

“This is a great achievement.”
