Alan Titchmarsh to explore Erddig’s history in new Channel 5 series
Viewers will have the chance to find out more about what goes on behind the scenes at Erddig Hall when a new television series is aired next week.
Presenter Alan Titchmarsh visits Wrexham’s Erddig Hall and its grounds as part the Channel 5 series, ‘Secrets of the National Trust’.
Arriving by horse and carriage, the Channel 5 presenter and national treasure uncovers the scandal of the thief-cook and delves into secret spaces on Erddig’s 1,200-acre estate on 27 June at 9pm, Channel 5.
As part of the programme, Alan was given a unique opportunity to join Erddig’s Head Ranger, James Stein on his annual check of William Emes’ cylindrical cascading water feature.
The water levels were low enough for James to guide Alan safely along the river bed, through the tunnel and into the cylindrical cascade captured perfectly on camera.
The 18th Century design, cleverly created to manage flooding and drain the surrounding fields, is known locally as the ‘cup and saucer’ and is the only known one of its kind in the UK.
Famous for creating many water features in previous television programmes, Alan likened the experience to “entering a lost world.”
James jokingly added: “Alan’s been partial to a water feature or two in his time, so I couldn’t resist inviting him to join me inside ours.”
The episode also features a closer look into the unique relationship between the Yorke family and their staff; with Graeme Clarke, house and collections manager, documenting how the Yorkes encouraged a romance between a nanny and groomsman, immortalise them in photos and verse and treat them with a respect unheard of among other grand houses.
In the kitchen, Conservation Assistant Heather Vernon shares Lucy Hitchman’s postcard album, which reveals the fondness between the servants and shines the spotlight on an art form that was once the twitter of its time.
Elsewhere Angelica Bell uncovers the history of Erddig’s garden with gardener Helen Eardley and takes a look at the restoration of the garden in the seventies; along with a tour of the apple orchards and an opportunity to try her hand at a mini cider press, then enjoy (or not) a taste of Erddig cider.
To see Erddig take its turn in the spotlight, tune in on Wednesday 2th7 June at 9pm, Channel 5 to find out more.
