An additional 3,500 homes across Wrexham are to receive the highly sought after wheelie recycling boxes.

The stackable boxes were initially distributed to 13,000 homes across Wrexham in 2016 and feature three separate recycling boxes for paper, glass and plastics and cans.

They were introduced as part of several changes to Wrexham Council’s recycling service.

Yesterday Wrexham Council announced that an additional 3,500 of the popular wheelie boxes were to be distributed to homes across the county borough after the local authority secured £116,000 in funding from the Welsh Government as part of its Collaborative Change programme.

The funding comes off the back of Wrexham Council’s improvements to its waste collection and recycling regime. Provisional recycling rates published earlier in June showed that Wrexham Council had achieved a recycle rate of 68% – the authority’s highest ever figure.

Wrexham Council say that thanks to the funds and by working in partnership with HMP Berwyn, it is now able to roll out a new series of trolley boxes for homes in locations throughout the county borough.

Distribution of the new boxes will begin on July 1st 2017.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We are extremely pleased that Wrexham has again been successful in our bid for funding to build on the good work we introduced last year.

“This funding has enabled the purchase of more recycling trolleys that proved so popular last year when we distributed 13,000 across the County Borough, helping us to reach 68% recycling – our highest ever figure.

“Following the delivery of the flat packed equipment, I am pleased to confirm that by working in partnership with HM Prison Berwyn, we have been able to complete the assembly of the Wheelie Boxes to meet our delivery timescale

“The scheme also provided work experience opportunities for the prison, which will help to aid the men as they transition and develop and into mainstream work upon their release.

“Commencing July 1, a further 3,500 Wheelie Boxes will be ready for distribution. Utilising experience gained to date and our previous selection criteria, we have ensured a good spread of deliveries across all of our new recycling rounds, and this roll-out will allow another 7% of properties a new recycling trolley, which means that over a quarter of the county borough will then benefit from the user friendly Wheelie Box system.”

Nick Dann, Deputy Project Director added: “We have welcomed the opportunity to work collaboratively with Wrexham Council – the development of good relationships across North Wales is extremely important to us at Berwyn. Meaningful work opportunities for our men within Berwyn and upon release are vital to their rehabilitation.”

Homes in the following areas are to receive the illustrious wheelie boxes: Some parts of Chirk Trevor, Ruabon, Llay, Gwersyllt, Summerhill, New Broughton, Maesgwyn, Rossett, Marford, Borras, Rhosrobin, Rhosddu, Acton, Marchwiel, Pentre Maelor, Holt, Tallwrn Green, Kingsmill and Park Avenue.
