Faulty temporary lights stuck on red caused several miles of tailbacks last nights, with the problem not solved for hours as the engineer was stuck in the traffic.

Last night queues of traffic northbound to Chester stretched back to Rossett, with the A55 also being majorly affected as a knock on due to the congestion.

A spokesperson for the Highways Agency told us this afternoon: “We sent an engineer to repair the temporary traffic lights at the A483 junction with the B5445 Wrexham Road as soon as we became aware of the issue on Wednesday evening, but he was caught up in the congestion and took longer than expected to reach the site.

“We would like to apologise to drivers who were affected by the fault.”

“The lights, which are checked regularly, are now working properly again. We are looking to replace this complex, temporary traffic light system with a permanent one over the next few weeks and will keep road users informed.”

On the Wrexham.com forums a poster has documented their call with the Highways Agency, indicating they were made aware of it around 5pm, with the problem with the lights only sorted out hours later around 8:30pm.

You can read coverage from last night here, with several direct accounts of the problems encountered.
